Firmware updater and installer

Choose a release and install it straight from your browser over USB-C.

Important: use Chrome or Edge on a desktop. Safari and mobile browsers aren't supported. Use a USB data cable with USB-C at the controller end; power-only cables won't work.

Back up first: a fresh install can wipe your settings. On current firmware, use Export Config on the controller's Diagnostics page to save your tune and settings to a file, then import it afterwards.

No cable next time: once the controller is on current firmware, later updates can be installed from its own OTA page by uploading littlefs.bin and then firmware.bin from the release folder on GitHub. USB is only needed for the first install, or if the web interface is ever lost.

USB flashing via ESP Web Tools

This browser can't talk to USB devices. Open this page in Chrome or Edge on a desktop computer.

USB access needs a secure connection. Open https://openhaldex.com/updater/.

Browser and cable requirements

  • Browser: Chrome (or another Chromium browser) or Microsoft Edge
  • Cable: a USB data cable, USB-C at the controller end
  • Ports: try a different USB port if it won't connect
  • Close other tools: serial monitors and other flashing tools can block access

If the device doesn't appear, unplug it, wait two seconds, plug it back in and try again. Most failures come down to an unsupported browser, a power-only cable, or another app holding the serial port. Shorter cables tend to work better.

Post-update checklist

  • Power cycle: turn the controller off and back on once flashing completes
  • Connect Wi-Fi: join the controller's Wi-Fi network
  • Open the interface: go to 192.168.1.1 or openhaldex.local
  • Confirm: check the firmware version on the Diagnostics page
  • Settings: import your backup, or re-enter your settings, then run Learn Haldex

If openhaldex.local doesn't resolve, use 192.168.1.1 directly.

Common issues and fixes

  • "No compatible devices found" or nothing appears: use Chrome or Edge on a desktop, try another USB port, and use a known-good data cable.
  • The permission pop-up doesn't show: make sure no other tab or app is using the serial port (PlatformIO serial monitor, Arduino IDE and so on).
  • Install starts, then fails part-way: swap cable or port, avoid USB hubs, and retry with the device unplugged and replugged.
  • The interface doesn't load after installing: power cycle the controller, join its Wi-Fi and open 192.168.1.1.
  • Wi-Fi connects but no page loads: check your phone or PC has actually stayed on the controller's Wi-Fi; some devices switch back to another network.
  • Device not detected at all: hold BOOT while plugging in the USB cable, release it, then connect again.
